Supporting Mothers in Temporary Accommodation

As Mother’s Day approaches, it’s important to acknowledge how the holiday may look for women at risk of homelessness transitioning into supported living.
For many of these women, Mother’s Day may evoke a mix of emotions from gratitude for their children to feelings of longing and sadness for the stability and security they may be striving to achieve. While many families
gather to celebrate and express their love and gratitude, these mothers may find themselves grappling with feelings of isolation, uncertainty, and financial strain. For them, the day serves as a poignant reminder of the hardships they face and the barriers preventing them from providing a stable and nurturing environment for their children. The absence of a permanent home, coupled with the stress of navigating complex social services and limited resources, can exacerbate feelings of inadequacy and guilt. Despite their unwavering love for their children, these mothers may
struggle to participate in traditional Mother’s Day celebrations, amplifying their sense of marginalization and invisibility. It’s essential to recognize and support these mothers with compassion and empathy, offering them the
dignity, respect, and assistance they deserve on this challenging day.

“While Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate and honour mothers, it’s essential to recognise the additional challenges faced by women experiencing homelessness and supported living, including the lack of stable housing, financial insecurity, and the impact of trauma on their mental health and wellbeing. As society commemorates Mother’s Day, it’s crucial to advocate for policies and support services that address the unique needs of these women, ensuring they have access to the resources, opportunities, and support necessary to create stable and nurturing environments for
themselves and their children. By fostering empathy, understanding, and support, we can work towards a future where all mothers, regardless of their housing status, feel valued, respected, and empowered to celebrate Mother’s Day with dignity and joy.”

Supporting Mothers’ to move beyond homelessness
We launched on a mission to provide quality accommodation for people
at threat of homelessness across the UK. We currently operate schemes across
the North West, North & South. A number of our schemes are dedicated to women and one
supports women and children usually under 8 years. We aim to provide a safe
and welcoming space where people are supported to move forward and beyond the impact of their experiences. Often people arrive who have experienced trauma such as abuse, and may arrive with just the clothes on their back.
Our dedicated scheme for Mothers has 23 self-contained flats, each one with a bedroom, bathroom, sitting room and a small kitchen/dining area. There are cots, beds, or bunk beds for children. There is also a shared lounge with a TV/ relax area, and communal kitchen. #TeamQuays are on hand to support clients with both practical and
emotional issues. Residents also provide mutual support to each other, and we encourage group activities such as art workshops to keep everyone busy and positive. Our support includes empowering residents with the tools for moving onto a permanent address and accessing the right financial support to navigate beyond supported living.
