Shining a Light: The Hidden Challenges Facing Women Threatened by Homelessness on International Women’s Day 2024
This year’s International Women’s campaign theme underscores the crucial role of inclusion in achieving gender equality. It calls for action to break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and create environments where all women are valued and respected. Inspire Inclusion encourages everyone to recognise the unique perspectives and contributions of women from all walks of life, including those from marginalised communities.
The theme #InspireInclusion resonates deeply with our business at the front line of homelessness in the UK. We are dedicated to daily efforts of fostering inclusion, particularly for those at risk of homelessness, empowering them to thrive and contribute to our community. We see first hand the inequality faced by individuals who are often living with profound challenges. On this day, we celebrate the resilience and strength of the women we work with, acknowledging their contributions to our community and society as a whole. By fostering a culture of inclusivity and advocating for gender equality, we strive to create a world where every woman feels valued, respected, and empowered to achieve her fullest potential.
Inclusion sits at the Heart of #TeamQuays
How our values drive the way we do things.
As we embarked on the journey of launching Quays Housing we recognised the importance of establishing strong foundational values that guide our actions and decisions. Inclusion stands as a cornerstone among these values, reflecting our commitment to creating a workplace and space for the people we support where every voice is heard, every perspective is valued, and every individual is respected. By embracing inclusion as a key value, we not only foster a culture of diversity and belonging within our team but also set a clear direction for our company’s vision—one that prioritises collaboration, empathy, and equity. These values serve as signposts, guiding us towards a future where innovation thrives, and every member of our community feels empowered to contribute their unique talents and perspectives.

Connecting Equity to Homelessness: Bridging the Divide for a Fairer Future
A number of our support schemes are specially aimed at supporting women to rebuild their lives, many come to us with nothing but the clothes on their back. In a world striving for equality and inclusion, it’s crucial to acknowledge the unique challenges faced by individuals at risk of homelessness who are transitioning into supported living arrangements. Despite progress in advocating for equal rights, these individuals often encounter barriers that hinder their journey towards true equality and inclusion.
One of the primary challenges lies in the stigma associated with homelessness. Society’s misconceptions and stereotypes can lead to discrimination and marginalization, making it difficult for individuals to access opportunities for housing, employment, and social inclusion. This stigma can follow them into supported living environments, where they may continue to face judgment and prejudice from others.
Furthermore, financial instability is a significant factor contributing to inequality. Many individuals threatened by homelessness struggle to afford basic necessities, let alone access resources for personal development and growth. This financial strain can limit their ability to participate fully in society and access opportunities for advancement.
In supported living environments, there may also be challenges related to integration and acceptance. Adjusting to communal living arrangements can be daunting, especially when individuals come from diverse backgrounds with different experiences and needs. Without proper support and understanding, feelings of isolation and exclusion can arise, further exacerbating inequalities.
Moreover, issues of mental health and trauma often accompany experiences of homelessness. The journey from homelessness to supported living is not merely a physical transition but also a psychological one. Past traumas and mental health challenges can impact an individual’s sense of self-worth and belonging, making it harder to navigate relationships and assert their rights to equality and inclusion.
Despite these challenges, there is hope. By fostering a supportive and inclusive environment within supported living facilities and addressing systemic issues such as stigma and inequality, we can create pathways for individuals threatened by homelessness to thrive. Providing access to resources, opportunities for skill development, and promoting community engagement are vital steps towards ensuring equality and inclusion for all.
Understanding & Empathy
At the heart of it all is empathy and understanding. By listening to the voices of those threatened by homelessness and working collaboratively to address their needs, we can move closer to a society where everyone is valued, respected, and included. It’s a journey that requires commitment, but the rewards of a more equitable and inclusive world are immeasurable.
Lets Unite in solidarity this international Women’s Day, lifting the voices of those facing homelessness, and pave the path towards a more inclusive and equitable future for all women.
International Women’s Day holds profound significance for our supported living organisation, especially as we champion inclusivity and empowerment within our community. On this day, we celebrate not only the achievements of women worldwide but also the resilience and strength of the women we support who are threatened by homelessness and those at #TeamQuays who sit on the front line of support. . Many of these women have faced unimaginable challenges, yet they persevere with grace and courage, inspiring us all. As we reflect on the theme of International Women’s Day and its call for gender equality, we reaffirm our commitment to providing a safe and supportive environment where every woman has the opportunity to thrive. By recognising and amplifying their voices, we honour their stories, their struggles, and their triumphs, working towards a future where all women are valued, respected, and empowered to live fulfilling lives.
